According to a major international study published in PLOS Medicine, even very little smoking poses a major threat to human health. According to scientists, people who smoke only 2-5 cigarettes a day have a nearly 60% higher overall mortality risk compared to those who have never smoked.
The study was prepared on the basis of more than 20 long-term observations conducted in the USA and Brazil. In total, more than 323 thousand adults were observed for 20 years, and during this period, more than 125 thousand deaths and 54 thousand cases of cardiovascular diseases were registered.
Scientists emphasize that even "minimal smoking" causes serious harm to the body:
- The risk of death from cardiovascular diseases increases by 57%;
- People who smoke one cigarette a day are also more likely to get sick than those who quit smoking anyway;
- Only in some types of arrhythmias and cases associated with stroke, a clear connection was not observed.
The research team emphasizes one point:
The only way to actually reduce the risk is to completely give up tobacco products.
Scientists say that the risk decreases significantly in the first 10 years after quitting smoking. After 20 years, the mortality rate of former smokers will be 80% lower than that of non-smokers.
That is, even the notion that "smoking less is less harmful" is wrong. Only complete abandonment provides real protection.
