Children with excess weight perform lower in mathematics

It has been revealed that children with excess weight or obesity receive lower grades in mathematics compared to their normal-weight peers, RIA Novosti reports. This conclusion was reached by specialists who studied the data of 1,500 secondary school students.
A study presented at the meeting of the Scientific Council "Sciences about Life" of the Russian Academy of Sciences noted that in overweight children, the relationship between the intestine and the brain is formed incorrectly from the very beginning. At the same time, it is noted that such effects are observed relatively less often in children who are not adequately fed.
This was announced by Leila Namazova-Baranova, Chief Children's Specialist for Preventive Medicine at the Russian Ministry of Health and President of the Pediatrics Union. In his opinion, these observations indicate the need for a more responsible approach to the issue of children's health.
Scientists also examined brain morphometry and noted that in overweight children, the volume of white matter increased significantly due to gray matter. The expert assessed this situation as a separate and serious problem.
Leila Namazova-Baranova emphasized that the results obtained indicate that the health status of the younger generation may influence the intellectual capabilities of the country in the future.
