The Portugal national team secured their spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup during the sixth round of the qualification stage by defeating Armenia 9-1. From the very beginning of the match, Portugal dominated, with Veiga scoring the opener.
However, Armenia responded quickly with a precise strike by Spertsyan during a counter-attack. Nevertheless, the hosts regained control swiftly: Ramos retrieved the ball and converted his chance into a goal, while Neves scored with a long-range shot to put his team in the lead.
The pressure intensified later. The team won a penalty, which Fernandes calmly converted into the bottom corner of the net.
Fernandes went on to score a brace, actively contributing to the attacks. Armenia attempted counter-attacks but lacked precision in their shots.
In the second half, Portugal completely took over. Neves scored a hat-trick, finding the net from outside the penalty area and converting a cross into another goal.
Fernandes also completed his hat-trick by slotting in a rebound and converting another penalty. In the final moments of the match, Conceição capitalized on an assist from Fernandes, sealing the 9-1 victory.
