Ahead of Roma’s match against Genoa in Round 18 of Italy’s Serie A, head coach Gian Piero Gasperini attended a press conference and spoke in detail about the team’s current condition, issues in attack, and squad changes.
According to the coach, he does not place major emphasis on whether a player starts or comes off the bench. What matters is who can benefit the team on the pitch. He specifically noted that Matias Soulé has become an important reference point for the side. He also said Lorenzo Pellegrini has played many minutes, while the remaining time has been shared almost evenly among Paulo Dybala, Artem Dovbyk, Evan Ferguson and Tommaso Baldanzi. Dovbyk, meanwhile, missed some matches due to injury.
Gasperini openly admitted that the team is not scoring as many goals as expected yet. This is not limited to a single match; it has been noticeable since pre-season. He stressed that compared to last season, Roma have lost two key players — Eldor Shomurodov and Alexis Saelemaekers. Bailey and Ferguson joined in their place. However, Bailey has often been troubled by injuries, while Ferguson is trying to help the team as much as he can.
At the same time, the coach praised the team’s overall work. He said all players are working conscientiously to push Roma up the table and maintain that position. Gasperini also did not hide that he is not placing big hopes on the winter transfer window. In his view, even if new players arrive, they will need time to adapt. For that reason, he prefers to trust the current squad.
For the record, Eldor Shomurodov left Roma during last summer’s transfer window and moved to Turkey’s Istanbul Başakşehir. Experts note that the Uzbek striker’s departure has, to some extent, affected the Romans’ attacking potential.
