"Everton" vs "Sunderland": Ruffs wins shootout, visitors advance

Regular time in the clash between Everton and Sunderland ended 1–1. With no winner in extra time either, the visitors prevailed in the penalty shootout.

Sunderland opened the scoring in the 30th minute: Enso Le Fe struck first time, sending the ball into the bottom corner. The Toffees searched for chances for a long time but did not significantly raise the tempo in attack. Still, in the 89th minute James Garner calmly converted a penalty to level it — 1–1.

In extra time, Everton enjoyed more possession, while the Black Cats responded with set pieces and shots from distance. In one episode, Jordan Pickford kept his team in it after Mandl’s effort. But even after 120 minutes, there was no winner.

In the shootout, Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Ruffs played the decisive role, saving attempts from Garner, Barry and Beto. For the visitors, Le Fe, Granit Xhaka and Luke O’Nyen converted their kicks. Sunderland won the shootout 3–0 and knocked Everton out of the competition.
