Why PSG struggled so much against underdogs Auxerre

In Round 19 of the French league, PSG faced lowly Auxerre away from home. What looked like an easy game on paper turned out to be far more demanding for the capital club: the Parisians had to fight for all three points until the very end. This is reported by euro-football.ru reports .

Throughout the match, PSG’s most criticized attacking player was Bradley Barcola: he squandered chance after chance, and it seemed his performance wasn’t living up to expectations. However, after Ousmane Dembélé came on from the bench in the 62nd minute, Barcola came to life — and it was this duo that created the winning goal.

In the 79th minute, Barcola opened the scoring and delivered a 1–0 win for PSG. Even so, there were players in the Paris side who failed to justify themselves — some were even rated among the weakest performers.

Striker Gonçalo Ramos did not hide his frustration when he was replaced by Dembélé in the 62nd minute, but he himself could not boast about his display either. In one episode he headed on target, yet the Auxerre goalkeeper saved. Overall, Ramos won few duels and did not have enough impact to help PSG break down a compact defense.

Midfielder Warren Zaïre-Emery also looked ineffective on the right flank. In the second half, Auxerre launched several dangerous attacks precisely through his area: opponents had little trouble beating him with dribbles or going past him easily. In attack, Zaïre-Emery’s contribution was barely noticeable.

Centre-backs Ilya Zabarnyi and Lucas Beraldo also failed to provide stability. They tried to cover the gaps that appeared behind Zaïre-Emery, but in some moments this caused even more issues: mistakes in marking inside the penalty area stood out, and Beraldo’s uncertain action inside the box looked particularly dangerous.

The match took place on January 23 at the Abbé-Deschamps stadium in Auxerre, and PSG won by the narrowest margin — 0–1.
