Shomurodov scores a brace as Istanbul Basaksehir pursues European qualification

Round 31 of the Turkish Super Lig kicked off with a clash between Istanbul Basaksehir and Kasimpasa. As the season enters its decisive phase, every match holds significant weight for the teams involved.

Currently, the title race is largely decided, with Galatasaray on the verge of clinching another trophy. While Fenerbahce and Trabzonspor are finding it difficult to catch the leaders, they remain locked in a tight battle for second place. Besiktas has fallen out of the title race but maintains its hold on fourth place, which grants a ticket to European competitions.

Meanwhile, a separate battle for European qualification is unfolding between Istanbul Basaksehir and Goztepe. Although it remains challenging for these teams to break into the top four, the outcome of the Turkish Cup could mean that a fifth-place finish also opens a path to Europe.

Consequently, Nuri Sahin’s side is playing for a win in every match. This determination was evident in the encounter against Kasimpasa. In the 5th minute of the match, Eldor Shomurodov opened the scoring, providing his team with an early advantage. Bertug Yildirim added a second goal in the first half, consolidating the hosts' lead.

In the second half, Davie Selke found the net to record his ninth goal of the season. In the closing minutes of the game, Shomurodov took center stage once again, scoring with a precise header to make it 4-0 and complete his brace.

With this performance, the Uzbek striker brought his goal tally in the Turkish championship to 20, closing in on the leaders of the Golden Boot race. Currently, Trabzonspor forward Paul Onuachu leads the standings with 22 goals. Additionally, Fenerbahce’s Taliska sits in the top three with 16 goals.

Shomurodov previously stated that he prioritizes team results over individual achievements. However, his current form suggests he is a serious contender for the top scorer title.

Following this victory, Istanbul Basaksehir solidified its hold on 5th place in the league table with 51 points. The team will face Fenerbahce away in their next match on May 3.

In short, Shomurodov and his team are in peak form. If this momentum continues, Basaksehir will remain a formidable contender in the race for European qualification.
