Oxford Crown Court has heard the case of two suspects who stole a gold toilet in 2019. The court found Michael Jones guilty of theft and breaking and entering, and Fred Dow of conspiracy to transport stolen goods.

Earlier, the court found another participant in the crime, James Sheen, guilty of theft and breaking and entering and conspiracy to transport stolen goods. Another suspect was acquitted. Michael Jones and Fred Dow will be sentenced at a later date.

The Gold Toilet is a modern art object created by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan for the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. The artist called his work “America”. Before its theft, the toilet was insured for $6 million, and about $4 million worth of gold was used in its manufacture.

In 2019, the object became part of an exhibition at Blenheim Palace. The palace is the residence of the Dukes of Marlborough, where Winston Churchill was born. Visitors to the exhibition could use it for their own purposes. According to Cattelan, he wanted to draw attention to inequality and the problems of the art market through his work.

In September of that year, criminals managed to break down the wooden gate of the palace in a truck and enter the building. Then they took the toilet, which weighs about 100 kilograms. According to the investigation, they cut the toilet into small pieces and sold it.
