Russia and North Korea expand cooperation in the medical field

Russia and North Korea expand cooperation in the medical field
Russia and North Korea are expanding cooperation in the medical field. In particular, it is planned to conduct internships in cardiology and oncology for North Korean doctors at leading medical centers in Moscow. The Russian Embassy in Pyongyang reported this on its official Facebook page.

Russian-North Korean medical ties are becoming more active

Russian Ambassador to the DPRK Alexander Matsegora met with North Korean Deputy Minister of Health Jong Sol Ren and discussed cooperation in the medical field between the two countries. Within the framework of this cooperation:

- Russian assistance in modernizing the pharmaceutical industry of North Korea;
- Cooperation in the production of modern antibiotics;
- Creation of new medical institutions in North Korea.

The North Korean side has expressed its readiness to share some of its national medical achievements. According to Jong Sol Ren, this medicine can show "extremely high effectiveness."

North Korean drugs are being sold in Russia

Due to the strengthening of medical cooperation between the two countries, a representative office of the Pyongyang Pugang Pharmaceutical Plant was opened in Russia in the fall of 2023. After that, biologically active additives (BAAs) produced in North Korea entered the Russian market.

For example, the drug called "Kumdan-2" is an injectable serum based on "six-year-old Kaesong ginseng." Sellers describe it as having the properties of rejuvenation, tissue regeneration and immunity enhancement. The price of three boxes of it reaches 7 thousand rubles.

Are North Korean drugs really effective?

Journalists conducted a survey about the true composition and effectiveness of drugs such as "Kumdan-2". Pharmacists in Russia stated that they have no information about such drugs.

The results of the examination conducted in South Korea were even more interesting:
  • The only substance found in the ampoules was the painkiller procaine (novocaine).
  • No other useful substances were found.

Such analyzes indicate that the true effectiveness of such drugs is in doubt. Despite this, they are actively sold in Russia.

Russia and North Korea continue to develop cooperation in the medical field. North Korean doctors are scheduled to undergo internships in Moscow, the pharmaceutical industry is planned to be modernized, and new medical institutions are planned. However, dubious information about North Korean drugs raises serious questions about their safety and effectiveness.

Medical cooperation can strengthen ties between the two countries, but there is also the possibility that questionable medicines could pose a threat to public health.
