Minister of Agriculture arrested

A major scandal has erupted in Kyrgyzstan’s system of state administration. The country’s State Committee for National Security reported that the Deputy Minister of Water Management, Agriculture, and Processing Industry was detained by the republic’s special services on charges related to corruption.

According to official information, not only the deputy minister but also the director of the veterinary service under the ministry were arrested during this process. Their identities have not been disclosed due to the interests of the investigation.

Charges brought
According to the SCNS, in July 2025 the government introduced special quotas for the export of livestock in order to stabilize meat prices on the domestic market. However, according to investigation results, certain officials misused this system and set up illegal schemes.

Reports indicate that they illegally issued quotas to individuals not engaged in livestock farming. Later, intermediaries turned this right into a business and resold the obtained quotas.

According to details, on the market the quota for cattle was resold at approximately 300 USD per head, while the quota for small livestock was resold at 5,000 soms.

Consequences
As a result, according to the SCNS, more than 40,000 heads of livestock were illegally imported into Uzbekistan through Jalal-Abad region alone. This led to a sharp increase in meat prices inside Kyrgyzstan.

Within the framework of the criminal case, the detainees were placed in the SCNS pre-trial detention center of Jalal-Abad region. The investigation is still ongoing, and new information may be revealed in the coming days.

Experts emphasize that such cases harm not only economic security but also negatively affect the daily lives of the population. Therefore, taking decisive measures in the fight against corruption remains an urgent task.
