The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan contacted Afghan officials following reports that the Alisher Navoiy statue was demolished in Mazar-i-Sharif, Kursiv.uz reported. The ministry issued an official statement regarding this incident.
According to the information, the local authorities demolished the statue because the area where it was located did not correspond to the memory of the great thinker. A more beautiful complex for the poet and thinker is planned to be built there.
The Ministry of Culture of Afghanistan was not consulted about these actions. Kabul expressed regret over the incident and announced that a new statue and a square dedicated to Navoiy will be established.
The Afghan side expressed its commitment to preserving the memory of the great thinker and emphasized that all measures will be taken to honor his name appropriately.
It should be recalled that after the Taliban came to power, several monuments related to Navoiy in Afghanistan were damaged. In 2023, a bas-relief and graffiti were damaged, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan expressed regret over this situation.
