US suspends immigration for 75 countries, including Uzbekistan

The Donald Trump administration has taken another headline-making step toward tightening US immigration policy. Starting January 21 this year, the issuance of immigrant visas and the processing of applications for citizens of 75 countries worldwide—including Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan—have been suspended indefinitely.

Banned countries and the reasons

The list released by the US State Department includes, in addition to Central Asian countries, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Russia, Belarus, Georgia, Armenia, as well as dozens of countries in Africa and Latin America.

Washington cites the following factors as the basis for this tough decision:

  • Risk of financial burden: Officials believe immigrants from these countries may become dependent on US public welfare benefits.
  • Tighter screening: The visa system is undergoing a “full review.” The goal is to select and screen applicants at the highest possible level.
  • Security measure: After the unfortunate incidents in November, the Trump administration pledged to restrict migration from “Third World” countries.

Bad news for those whose visas are already ready

According to Reuters, the restrictions apply even to people whose visas were ready to be printed or had not yet been released by the consulate. State Department staff have reportedly been given specific instructions to deny such visas as well.

Does not affect tourist (Visitor) visas

The good news is that these restrictions do not apply to tourist and temporary visit (B1/B2) visas. The main reason is that the US will host the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Olympic Games. The administration is compelled to maintain the flow of fans and tourists.

Crisis in the immigration system

Experts say the ban could block nearly 315,000 lawful immigrants over the next year. Since Trump took office, more than 100,000 visas have been revoked, and new fees and hurdles are being introduced even for H-1B visas intended for highly skilled professionals.

“This decision effectively bans nearly half of lawful immigrants coming to the United States,” says immigration research director David Bier.

Do you think these tough US restrictions will reduce illegal migration, or will they instead push people to seek more dangerous routes?
