Millions of skywatchers around the world will have the opportunity to observe one of the rare astronomical phenomena, the "Blue Moon," this weekend. This was reported by CNN.
According to experts, the full moon observed on May 31 is considered a calendar Blue Moon. Such an event occurs when there are two full moons in a single calendar month and repeats every two to three years.
Despite its name, the Moon does not actually turn blue. The term "Blue Moon" is purely an astronomical concept referring to the second full moon. However, there have been historical instances where the Moon appeared blue due to volcanic eruptions.
This particular Blue Moon will have another unique feature. It will also be observed as a micromoon, the farthest full moon of the year. Therefore, although the Moon may appear slightly smaller than usual, this difference is difficult to notice with the naked eye.
Astronomers state that no special equipment is required to observe the Blue Moon. It can be viewed with the naked eye under a clear sky.
