According to the results of a new study, vitamin D may protect telomeres from shortening and safeguard the human body from age-related diseases. This was reported by Mass General Brigham.
It is known that telomeres are protective caps at the ends of chromosomes. With age, they shorten and may cause the development of various diseases.
The study noted that taking vitamin D supplements helped preserve telomeres. Compared to placebo, taking vitamin D for four years significantly slowed telomere shortening and prevented aging equivalent to about three years. At the same time, the effect of omega-3 fatty acids during the entire observation period was almost negligible.
The researchers emphasized that the results obtained indicate that the proper use of vitamin D may be an effective method against biological aging. However, additional studies are required to draw definitive conclusions.
