Collagen is the most abundant type of protein in the human body, and it makes up the bulk of skin, bones, muscles, and connective tissue. Recently, Spanish scientists conducted an interesting study to investigate the effects of collagen supplements on excess weight. This experiment may reveal the benefits of collagen not only for cosmetic purposes, but also for health and weight management.
How did collagen bars work?
The study involved 64 overweight participants aged 20 to 65. One group of participants was divided into two groups and consumed a collagen protein bar with a glass of water every day for 12 weeks, 45 minutes before lunch and dinner.
These bars contained:
- 10 grams of hydrolyzed collagen,
- 9 grams of protein,
- over 7 grams of carbohydrates,
- 3.2 grams of fat,
- 2.5 grams of dietary fiber,
- Dark chocolate, soy protein, syrup and sunflower oil.
The participants in the second group drank only water.
Doubled weight loss in 12 weeks
According to the results of the study, the group that consumed collagen bars lost an average of 3 kg, which is almost twice as much as the group that drank only water (1.5 kg). More importantly, the group that consumed collagen:
- Blood pressure decreased,
- Liver function improved,
- Weight loss was maintained while maintaining muscle mass.
This ensured that one of the biggest problems in weight loss was not losing muscle.
The reasons for the result are in the properties of collagen
Scientists explain this result by the fact that collagen increases the volume of the stomach, increases the feeling of fullness, and also has a positive effect on the intestinal microbiota. Collagen is one of the most difficult proteins to digest, and more energy is spent on its absorption in the body. Therefore, it can activate metabolism and help with weight loss.
In addition, once it reaches the large intestine, it acts as food for beneficial bacteria, which leads to the production of short-chain fatty acids that reduce inflammation.
The study also has limitations
Although the results are promising, the scientists noted that due to the small number of participants (64 people) and the short duration of the experiment (12 weeks), caution should be taken before drawing any definitive conclusions. Also, the bar contains not only collagen, but also protein, fiber, sugar substitutes and other beneficial components. It is also possible that weight loss occurred precisely due to the combination of these substances.
Conclusion from the Zamin.uz editorial staff
Collagen supplements can be an effective tool in the process of losing weight, but it is important to do this under the supervision of a specialist, with a comprehensive approach. Obesity is a complex condition related not only to nutrition, but also to hormones, mental state and lifestyle.
Therefore, it is recommended to consult a doctor or nutritionist before adding any supplement - including collagen - to a diet or healthy eating strategy. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
