Recently, many people have started paying attention to gut health. This is because the billions of beneficial bacteria in the gut affect digestion, immunity, mood, and sleep. According to experts, keeping these bacteria healthy requires feeding them properly — that is, eating foods rich in fibre.
Dr Xand, a doctor on the “Morning Live” programme, recommends using simple foods instead of expensive probiotic drinks to improve gut health. He says it’s beneficial to eat popcorn instead of crisps, choose dried fruits instead of sweets, and add chickpeas or lentils to meat dishes. These foods feed the good bacteria in the gut and improve digestion.
He also advises choosing plain nuts instead of salted or sweetened ones, and eating frozen berries with kefir instead of ice cream. These foods provide natural sweetness, healthy fats, and live bacteria.
According to Dr Xand, the most important thing for a healthy gut is to regularly eat fruits, vegetables, and natural foods rich in fibre. He notes that spending a lot of money on probiotic supplements has no proven benefit. Even the simplest food choices can be the key to healthy digestion and a good mood.
