Ads are coming to ChatGPT: visible in the free version and ChatGPT Go

OpenAI announced that it will begin testing ads in the ChatGPT chatbot in the coming weeks. According to the company’s official statement, ads in the free version as well as on the ChatGPT Go plan will be shown, but Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise subscribers will continue to have an ad-free ChatGPT experience as usual.
OpenAI explains the move very simply: ad revenue will help cover the costs of developing new, more powerful AI models, infrastructure, and scaling the service. In other words, the company is opening a new funding stream to keep free (or cheaper) access available.
The most common question is: “What about my chats?” OpenAI emphasizes that users’ conversations and personal data will not be sold or shared with advertisers. Ads will appear separately from answers, with a clear boundary between “where the ad is” and “where ChatGPT’s response is.”
For now, the company isn’t saying ads are already “live” for everyone—reports suggest the first tests will be run among adult (18+) Free and Go users in the United States . After that, a separate decision will be made on whether to expand.
In short: anyone who wants to use ChatGPT for free or cheaper may see ads. If you don’t want ads at all—nothing changes for Plus/Pro/Business/Enterprise (and, according to some sources, Edu).
The takeaway for the future is simple: AI services aren’t built on a “free forever” formula. The good news is that OpenAI is stressing trust—ads won’t interfere with answers, and personal data won’t go to advertisers.
