Chinese researchers have succeeded in creating a new type of lithium battery that could revolutionize the electric vehicle industry. Developed by scientists at Nankai University and the Shanghai Institute, this technology has set an absolute record for energy density. The energy density of the new batteries is 700 watt-hours per kilogram. For comparison, modern batteries currently in use can provide a maximum of 255 watt-hours.
The main secret of this discovery lies in the use of a new liquid electrolyte containing fluorinated hydrocarbons. Unlike traditional oxygen-based solutions, this fluorine-based system significantly accelerates ion movement and improves conductivity. As a result, it becomes possible to increase the range of electric vehicles several times over without increasing the weight of the battery.
Another important advantage of the new technology is its resistance to extreme weather conditions. Even at minus 50 degrees Celsius, the battery is capable of maintaining an energy density of 400 watt-hours. This indicator could solve the main problems of using electric vehicles in cold climate regions. According to experts, this development will be widely used not only in the automotive industry but also in aviation, space programs, and robotics.
