Tashkent Metro: The Day the First Station Opened

The date November 6, 1977, holds great significance in the history of Tashkent city. On this very day, the first section of the first line of the Tashkent Metro was ceremoniously opened.

This metro was the first in Central Asia and the seventh in the former USSR, according to the “Tashkent Retrospective” project referencing the “Mytashkent.uz” source. The central event of the celebration was a rally held at the former “V.

I. Lenin Square” (now “Independence Square”) station.

During the official ceremony, the head of the “Toshmetrostroy” trust, P. V.

Semyonov, symbolically handed over the metro key to Sharof Rashidov, the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Uzbek SSR at that time. Interestingly, November 6 was also Sharof Rashidov’s birthday, so the opening of the metro coincided with his birthday.
