A rift in the earth's crust has begun at the junction of the Arabian and Eurasian tectonic plates.

The rifting processes were detected by geologists from the University of Göttingen, Bild reported. Scientists have found that the remains of the ancient ocean floor continue to sink to the bottom of the planet, but in one place this process has stopped and rocks have begun to rise there.

"This indicates that the oceanic plate in this area has already separated and stopped pulling the earth's crust down," explained the head of the study, Renas Koshnav.

However, this process continues under the Zagros Mountains in Iraq. Here, the earth's crust continues to sink, forming a depression 3-4 km deep. Geologists predict that the rift will expand towards Iraq.

Despite these changes, scientists do not see a serious threat. "The number of earthquakes has even decreased in the areas where the rift has appeared," explained scientist Jonas Clay.

On February 6, 2023, two earthquakes with a magnitude of 7.0 struck southeastern Turkey, followed by dozens of aftershocks. The devastating disaster claimed the lives of more than 50,000 people in Turkey and nearly 9,000 in Syria, and injured tens of thousands more.
