Prisoner Escaping in a Bag Shocks All of France

Prisoner Escaping in a Bag Shocks All of France
In a scene reminiscent of a crime movie, a 20-year-old inmate escaped from a prison in southeastern France by hiding in the bag of his cellmate who was due to be released. This was reported by BFMTV.

According to available information, the young man left the facility on July 11 along with another prisoner who had completed his sentence. The prison administration only noticed the escape a day later — on July 12. A manhunt is currently underway.

The escaped inmate had been serving time for crimes such as human trafficking, theft, and was under investigation for links to organized crime. His escape revealed not only flaws in supervision but also serious shortcomings in France’s prison system.

The prison warden, Sébastien Covel, called it “a rare but very serious violation of the law.” He added that this incident was the result of “a buildup of systemic errors.”

Interestingly, the prison in Corbas was operating at 170% of its capacity — a situation that significantly complicated staff operations. Authorities believe the overcrowding may have made it easier for the prisoner to go unnoticed.

An internal investigation has been launched, and the Rhône Department Interagency Police has taken over the case.
