The Russian army lost about 1,400 tanks and more than 3,700 infantry fighting vehicles and armored personnel carriers in the war against Ukraine in 2024. In total, since the beginning of the war, the Russian Armed Forces have lost about 14,000 tanks, infantry fighting vehicles and armored personnel carriers, say the authors of the "Military Balance" study published by the British International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) on Wednesday, February 12.
At the same time, Russia managed to compensate for some of its losses during the year. Thus, last year the Russian Federation repaired more than 1,500 tanks and about 2,700 infantry fighting vehicles and armored personnel carriers. At the same time, the equipment in the warehouses is probably not in good condition, which may prevent the Russian army from fully covering its losses.
It is difficult to determine Russia's losses in terms of soldiers, the authors of the study write. However, as of early January 2025, at least 172 thousand Russian soldiers had been killed and 611 thousand were wounded. According to the researchers, up to 235 thousand wounded could return to the front. In total, by the end of December 2024, up to 617 thousand Russian troops were deployed in Ukraine and near the border with it.
Researchers say Ukraine's army is in worse shape than Russia's
The Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF) are not currently in a dire state of equipment, the researchers write. However, they add that to stop Russian troops and launch offensive operations, they will need "significantly more weapons, especially modern Western-made systems." "If the West reduces or stops its support, the situation will seriously deteriorate in the medium term," the report's authors write.
Ukraine's main problem remains a shortage of personnel. Thus, according to the IISS, "the need for additional soldiers is estimated at 50,000 to 100,000 people." If the country can solve the problem of personnel shortages, its military potential will improve significantly, the study says. Follow “Zamin” news on “Telegram”
