Russian journalist poisoned in Uzbekistan to be compensated

In Tashkent, Court Orders Large Compensation from Those Responsible for the Tragic Incident Involving Russian Journalist Papyernaya

A court in Tashkent has ruled to collect large compensation from those responsible for the tragic poisoning of Russian journalist Inessa Papyernaya and her companion Maxim Radchenko, who were poisoned by carbon monoxide at a hotel in the capital in October 2024. This was reported by RIA Novosti, citing the court’s decision.

According to the court ruling, Radchenko’s relatives will receive 60.7 million soums, while Papyernaya’s relatives will receive 67.6 million soums. This amount is compensation for the expenses incurred for conducting the expert examination and transporting the bodies of the deceased to their homeland.

Four defendants were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 3 to 8 years. Following the trial, the hotel owner, a plumber, and two sellers of heating equipment were found guilty. The court’s findings revealed that the actions of the defendants—specifically the leakage of carbon monoxide and the improper installation of equipment—were the causes of the tragedy.

The incident occurred in October 2024 in one of the hotel rooms in Tashkent, where the bodies of Inessa Papyernaya, Maxim Radchenko, and a citizen of Uzbekistan were found. Investigations confirmed that the deaths were caused by carbon monoxide poisoning. The causes of the gas leak, related to issues with the ventilation system, were identified.

The heating system in the hotel was outdated, and serious technical violations were made during its installation, including the removal of the siphon meant to drain condensate. According to specialists, this led to the gas leakage.

After the court ruling, the guilty parties were sentenced to prison. The court considered the technical errors and issues within the system that led to this tragedy during the investigation.

The compensation for Papyernaya and Radchenko’s families will not bring them back or replace their loss, but it will ease their pain and sorrow. The court’s decision was an important step in ensuring moral justice.
