As reported by Deutsche Welle, during the study, six types of chocolate produced in Europe and Dubai were analyzed. The results were shocking: they contained not only low-quality, but also substances hazardous to human health.
Results of the study and examination
During the study, experts examined chocolates ranging in price from 7 to 25 euros in the laboratory. The samples came from two sources:
- Dubai – 2 chocolates;
- Turkey – 1 chocolate;
- The Netherlands – 1 chocolate;
- Germany – 2 chocolates.
The results of the inspection were announced on March 18 and revealed a number of alarming facts.
Carcinogens and traces of mold
During the analysis, dangerous substances - 3-monochloropropanediol and glycidyl ethers - were detected in chocolates produced in Dubai. These substances are found in the composition of refined palm oil and are considered carcinogenic.
Also, aflatoxins - substances produced by mold fungi - were detected in a sample of chocolate made from pistachios. Although experts say that these substances do not pose a serious threat, they cannot be in the composition of quality chocolate.
Composition and detected defects
Although one of the Dubai-style chocolates did not contain hazardous substances, they do not have any gastronomic features. Only one - chocolate produced in the UAE - had a distinct taste of pistachios. The remaining chocolates were dominated by a simple nutty flavor.
Also, the chocolate composition consists mainly of sugar and vegetable oil, and some products also contain flavorings and coloring agents. This does not allow us to call the chocolate a high-quality product.
Experts also identified serious shortcomings in labeling and warning information. In four cases, information about the composition of the product and allergens was not indicated at all.
Is the hype about "Dubai chocolate" unfounded?
According to the conclusions of the inspectors, the wonderful descriptions of "Dubai chocolate" are unfounded. Experts recommend classic pistachio chocolate as a cheaper and safer alternative to this dessert.
If consumers want a dessert in the true Dubai style, experts recommend preparing it at home. Such recipes are often found on the Internet. The necessary ingredients are:
- Chocolate,
- "Angel's hair" (sold in oriental sweets shops),
- Vegetable oil,
- Sesame paste,
- Pistachio cream.
Studies have shown that some chocolates are not only of poor quality, but also dangerous to health. Therefore, consumers are advised to be careful when choosing chocolate and carefully read the ingredient label.
