BBC's 'name mistake' sparks public outrage
BBC Commentator’s Name Slip Sparks Social Media Outcry

During Wimbledon, veteran BBC commentator Andrew Castle made what seemed a small mistake that caused a large public backlash. He repeatedly misnamed American football star Trinity Rodman as “Tiffany,” prompting an apology.

The 23-year-old Olympic champion and US national team forward responded on Instagram:
“For those who don’t know: my name is Trinity, not Tiffany.”

Rodman is the girlfriend of American tennis player Ben Shelton, currently competing at Wimbledon. She was seen in the stands during his match against Lorenzo Sonego.

Did He Cross a Line?
Beyond the name error, Castle also made another comment:
“Her father is Dennis Rodman, one of the greatest athletes ever, in my opinion. The best rebounder in NBA history and quite the provocateur.”

Rodman replied:
“This is Ben’s match. His family is there supporting him. My dad isn’t even in my life. No need to bring him up. Please respect that.”

Past Criticism Recalled
In 2016, Castle was accused of sexism after remarks about another player’s girlfriend. In 2022, he was criticized for praising convicted tennis star Boris Becker.

BBC issued a statement:
“Andrew apologises for mispronouncing Trinity Rodman’s name during the Ben Shelton v Lorenzo Sonego match.”
