After major talks in Saudi Arabia and Qatar, US President Donald Trump arrived in the United Arab Emirates, the last stop on his Middle East tour. On May 15, Trump, who arrived in Abu Dhabi, was personally welcomed by UAE President Sheikh Zayed Al Nahyan and officially honored by the head of state at the Qasr Al Watan residence.
During the event, Trump was awarded the UAE's highest award, the Order of Zayed. In honor of his visit, the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, was decorated with the colors of the American flag, symbolically expressing hospitality.
Strategic cooperation in the field of AI - on a new level
Trump's visit to the UAE was not only official, but also historic in the field of technology. Even bigger than the investment deals in Saudi Arabia and Qatar - the UAE announced its intention to invest a total of $1.4 trillion in the US economy over the next 10 years.
One of the most important agreements signed during the visit was a cooperation agreement in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). The technology talks were attended by OpenAI founder Sam Altman, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, and the US’s top AI policy official, David Sachs.
Construction of a new 5-gigawatt AI campus has begun in the UAE. The facility is expected to be the largest artificial intelligence center outside the US. The campus is expected to use 500,000 Nvidia chips per year. This will pave the way for the creation of the first large data centers in the Middle East.
What other agreements were signed?
- A new US-UAE contract worth $200 billion was signed;
- A $14.5 billion aircraft deal was announced between Boeing, GE Aerospace, and Etihad Airways for the purchase of 28 aircraft;
- The AI Infrastructure Partnership (AIP) project will attract $30 billion in direct investment and $100 billion in debt by 2025;
- A separate agreement was signed between the two countries to ensure technological security.
AI deals — a cause for concern in Washington
Although AI deals seem economically attractive, they are met with concern in the US political sphere. The Biden administration has previously opposed the export of these AI technologies to the UAE, because there is a risk that artificial intelligence technologies will be transferred to China or other competing countries through these centers.
Trump Tower to be built in Dubai
Also, as one of the symbolic and economic symbols of Trump’s visit, plans have been announced to build a new 80-story Trump Tower in Dubai. It will be located near the Burj Khalifa and is expected to become a new architectural landmark.
