Weddings in Chechnya, especially ceremonies held in the leader’s family, are not just symbols of love and happiness but also an embodiment of the ancient traditions, religious faith, and the harmonious fusion of modern life. Recently, Adam Kadyrov's wedding was held as a grand event incorporating all these traditions and symbols.
Preparation and “chokhi”: purity and the path to a new life
For the bride, preparing for the wedding has special meaning in Chechnya. Bathing with healing herbs, spreading fragrant smoke in the room – these rituals prepare the bride to enter her new life with purity. The bride wears modest clothing approved by the community, and protective symbols such as a needle, coin, and ribbon are attached to the hem of her dress. These are not only decorations but are also considered talismans for blessings and protection as she enters a new life.
Kalym and the symbolic “bride kidnapping”
One of the most interesting stages of the wedding is paying the kalym (bride price) and overcoming symbolic obstacles. When the groom’s side comes to take the bride, the bride’s side sets up a rope, cloak, or cord and demands a ransom. This custom symbolizes respect for the bride’s parents, gratitude, and serves as a test of the groom’s seriousness.

Solemn ceremony, revival of traditions and symbols
During the ceremony, the wedding cortege moves accompanied by national music, traditional gunfire, and spectacular performances. When the bride and groom enter the house, the bride makes her first steps with special rituals: removing the carpet and broom, leaving money – this shows her thoughtfulness and attentiveness to life.
Children, compliments and wishes for happiness
Children play an active role in the wedding – the bride receives the son of a respected relative, she strokes the child and gives a gift. This ritual expresses wishes for future prosperity, descendants, and happiness.
“Unfastening the tongue”, prayer and test for the new bride
In Chechen weddings, the "unfastening the tongue" ritual is very important – the father-in-law or a mullah gives the bride water. If she remains silent, the guests drink from the glass in turn, place money inside, and only after this does the bride gain the right to speak for the first time. This ritual is a symbol of respect and a test for her place in the new family.
Festivities, national dances and purification rituals
At the main part of the wedding, guests perform the lezginka dance, with men and women dancing separately. Food, sweets and tea dominate, alcoholic drinks are prohibited. The groom and bride sit separately, paying attention to every guest. The toastmaster gives a speech, elders offer prayers, and wish happiness and joy.
Spring rituals and the path to family happiness
On the next day, the new bride is taken to a spring, a flatbread with a needle is thrown into the water – according to ancient beliefs, to “get rid of spirits” and wish for new happiness. The bride’s parents come to the home with sweets to congratulate, with more jokes and tests continuing.
Conclusion: Chechen weddings – symbols of value, respect, and unity
Adam Kadyrov's wedding was held not just for one family, but for the whole Chechen community as an example of ancient tradition, Islamic value, and modern respect. These ceremonies give deep meaning, spiritual strength, and hope for the future to every young family. Kindness, tradition, and values once again showed their eternal significance and supremacy in Chechen life. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
