On Wednesday, February 25th, US President Donald Trump delivered his traditional address to the nation in front of both houses of Congress. Summing up his year of rule, Trump emphasized with particular pride that the country had become an unprecedentedly powerful and wealthy nation.
"Golden Age of America" and economic successes
In his speech, the president focused on achievements in domestic policy and considered curbing inflation and lowering fuel prices as the main service of his administration. Trump emphasized that over $18 trillion in investments have been attracted to the US, but independent experts and data on the White House website suggest these figures may be slightly exaggerated.
The head of state also supported the introduction of duties on foreign goods and hinted that in the future this system could completely replace the income tax paid by the population.
Foreign policy and promise to end wars
In foreign policy, Trump listed the release of Israeli hostages and the "end of eight wars" as his achievement. In his speech, which coincided with the fourth anniversary of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, he said that decisive measures are being taken to stop the war. At the same time, he emphasized once again: "If I had been in power, this war would never have started."
Tensions and protests in Congress
The president's one-and-a-half-hour speech was accompanied by uncompromising debates and protests. Democrats welcomed Trump's words about migration with a whistle. Before the meeting began, Democrat Al Green was expelled from the hall for carrying a poster against racial abuse.
Hundreds of protesters gathered in front of the Congress building, chanting slogans against Trump's policies. They accused the president of harsh treatment of migrants and close ties with the Russian leadership, raising sarcastic slogans like "Trumputin."
