In the Franz Josef Land archipelago located in the Arctic, a stunning discovery was made by Russian scientists — on Wilczek Island, the bones of whales that lived thousands of years ago were found. This was reported by Peopletalk.
This find occurred as a result of research carried out as part of the “Arctic Floating University–2025” expedition. The expedition is engaged in studying the impact of climate change in the Arctic.
Over the last 20 years, the glacier on Wilczek Island has split into two parts, revealing land that was previously hidden under the ice. These bones, found on a marine terrace near the ocean, are very well preserved in some places. This condition is probably explained by the effect of permafrost.
Researchers are drawing conclusions about sea level changes over the last millennia based on this discovery.
As noted by institute representative Nikita Demidov, such finds help not only to reconstruct the past ecological state in the Arctic, but also to forecast important scenarios of future climate change.
Each melting of Arctic ice opens new doors not only for the climate but also for scientific discoveries. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
