Southern Syria is once again at the center of international attention. According to the SANA state agency, as a result of negotiations between the government and representatives of the local population, the evacuation of about 1,500 peaceful Bedouins from the city of Suwayda has begun. People are being transported to safe areas by pickups and minibuses, sana.sy reports.
The German agency dpa also notes that the evacuation is being carried out on a large scale: first, 350 people were delivered to the neighboring Daraa province. Syrian government officials regard this operation as a "step towards peace and compromise."
Interior Minister Ahmad al-Dalati said that after recent deadly clashes, the government's main goal is to prevent new fighting and restore stability in the region. For this reason, it is planned to give the people who left Suwayda the opportunity to return to their homes.
On July 19, Acting President Ahmad al-Shaara officially announced an “immediate ceasefire,” but according to some sources, some fighting continued. On July 20, information appeared that the city of Suwayda, mainly inhabited by Druze, had completely come under their control.
According to experts, the current evacuation and peace talks may pave the way for long-awaited stability in the region and serve to save lives. Today’s situation, on the one hand, increases uncertainty and anxiety, but on the other hand, is noted as an important stage in the pursuit of peace and compromise. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
