Germany is Transforming the Battlefield with Artificial Intelligence
Germany is determined to take the lead in military technology in Europe. The country plans to increase its defense budget to 162 billion euros by 2029. Key focus areas include artificial intelligence, autonomous robots, combat drones, and innovative surveillance technologies.

One of the most notable startups is Helsing, which develops combat drones and AI solutions. It was recently valued at $12 billion. According to Gundbert Scherf, “For the first time, Europe is investing more in military technologies than the United States.”

Among the innovative technologies being developed in Germany, Swarm Biotactics’ “spy cockroaches” have drawn special attention. These live insects are controlled via artificial stimulation and can collect real-time intelligence data.

New Law and Rapid Implementation of Military Technologies
The German government is preparing a draft law to make it easier for startups to enter new defense tenders. This law will allow small companies to participate in military orders through advance payments. Additionally, only manufacturers based within the European Union will be allowed to participate.

German startups such as ARX Robotics, Quantum Systems, and Donaustahl are also involved in the development of AI-powered robots, drones, and new types of weaponry.

Germany’s Strategic Shift
As the U.S. role in NATO becomes more uncertain, Germany is focusing on strengthening its military capabilities and localizing the European defense industry. Although the German economy has slowed over the past two years, investments in military technologies could become a new driving force.

In 2024, venture capital investments in European defense startups reached $1 billion, with Germany among the most active investors.
