90 percent of journalist murders remain unsolved

9 out of 10 cases of journalist killings worldwide remain unsolved. This was stated by UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

According to UNESCO data, from August 2023 to May 2025, 163 journalists were killed as a result of attacks. Of these, 109 worked in conflict zones.

The highest number of deaths were recorded in Gaza, Sudan, and Ukraine. “Free and independent journalism is one of the most important values for society.

Journalists everywhere must be able to carry out their activities freely, impartially, and without fear,” said the UN Secretary-General. António Guterres strongly condemned the killing of media representatives and called the restrictions on foreign journalists entering Gaza unacceptable.

According to UNESCO data, the rate of impunity for crimes against journalists remains highest in Middle Eastern and North African countries. The main reasons for this situation are cited as weak judicial systems, corruption, and a lack of political will from governments.
