US Strikes Islamic State in Syria

US forces carried out a strike against the “Islamic State” group in Syria. The attack used airplanes, helicopters, and artillery to destroy more than 70 targets in central Syria.

The strikes were in response to an attack on US soldiers in the city of Palmyra on December 13. In that attack, two US soldiers and one civilian translator were killed.

President Donald Trump said strong measures are being taken against the “Islamic State.” The Defense Secretary said the operation is not the start of a war but a response to the attack on Americans.

Sources say the strikes targeted areas near Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor. Some “Islamic State” fighters and leaders were killed. The US has been fighting the “Islamic State” in Syria since 2015.
