The former Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine's Armed Forces and the current Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Valeriy Zaluzhny, has issued a statement regarding the perilous prospects Ukraine may face after the conclusion of the armed conflict. The general, relying on his "intuition," warned of the possibility of a civil war breaking out within the country.
Economic strain and unemployment issues
According to the publication "Novini.LIVE," Zaluzhny predicts that Ukraine will face a severe economic crisis in the post-war period. In his assessment, hundreds of thousands of citizens being left without jobs and homes could lead to social unrest:
Valeriy Zaluzhny: “Hundreds of thousands of people will be left on the streets, and it will become very easy to incite conflict between them and society. This directly threatens internal stability.”
The fate of veterans: Will the 1990s scenario repeat?
The politician also highlighted that nearly 1 million soldiers are expected to return home from the frontlines in the near future. Failure to successfully reintegrate them into society could have dire consequences:
- Rise in crime: Individuals with combat experience may turn to crime in pursuit of "quick money."
- Historical parallels: Zaluzhny compared this situation to the aftermath of the 1989 Soviet-Afghan War and the subsequent "bloody 1990s."
- Social tensions: Incorrect treatment of veterans within the country could transform them into a "political instability" factor.
Peace and the boundary of defeat
In Zaluzhny’s opinion, Ukraine needs a swift peace deal that, while falling short of complete victory, would allow the nation to preserve and develop itself. He defines defeat as follows:
Valeriy Zaluzhny: “For me, defeat means the disintegration of the country and its complete occupation. All other scenarios are merely continuations of the war.”
The general emphasized that the peace terms currently being proposed to Ukraine are becoming increasingly disadvantageous. However, as these terms remain unacceptable for Kyiv, solid grounds for achieving long-term peace are yet to emerge. A prolonged peace, Zaluzhny stressed, is Ukraine’s only chance to rebuild as a state.
