Church attack in Nigeria leaves two dead

Gunmen attacked a local church in Eruku, a border town in Nigeria's Kwara State, killing two people. According to eyewitnesses, on the evening of November 18, a group of armed men stormed the outskirts of the town, opening fire indiscriminately.

Local residents noted that the attackers acted swiftly and appeared well-armed. Out of fear, people fled into nearby forests.

A resident of the town reported that the assailants killed two people on the spot and abducted several others. However, the exact number of those abducted remains unknown at this time.

Other locals highlighted that Eruku has witnessed repeated attacks over the past three weeks. Kwara State Police stated that rapid response forces were deployed to the scene and succeeded in forcing the attackers to retreat.

During the investigation, police discovered the body of one man inside the local church and another body in a nearby forest. A member of a local self-defense group sustained gunshot injuries and is undergoing treatment at Eruku’s hospital.

Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq condemned the attack and ordered the reinforcement of security measures in border areas. He expressed condolences to the families of the victims and assured the public that the government would continue efforts to stabilize the situation.

He also mentioned that the Nigerian government recently deployed nearly 900 soldiers to Kwara State to enhance regional security. This attack comes a few days after the abduction of 26 schoolchildren in Kebbi State.

Two of those children managed to escape, but the school’s deputy principal was killed during the attack. Previously, former U.S. President Donald Trump accused the Nigerian government of failing to protect local Christians from attacks by Islamist militants and even threatened military action against the country.

The former president’s stance had been supported by popular rapper Nicki Minaj.
