Kazakhstan’s Muftiate bans deepfakes and subscriber “boosting” on social media

The Spiritual Administration of Muslims of Kazakhstan (DUMK) has adopted a fatwa banning the use of deepfakes on social media as well as artificially inflating subscriber counts. The decision was approved by the Council of Ulama. Kursiv.uz reports reports .

The fatwa states that spreading false information through deepfakes is considered deception and contradicts Islamic legal norms. It also forbids Muslims in Kazakhstan from increasing follower numbers using fake or bot accounts, as well as paying for such services.

DUMK emphasized that such actions mislead people and undermine the principles of honesty enshrined in the Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Fatwas are advisory in nature and serve as guidance for Muslim communities and believers.

Information about these decisions has been published on DUMK’s official website. A deepfake is an image or video created using artificial intelligence that appears highly realistic.
