Maia Sandu: If there is a referendum, I would choose union with Romania

Moldovan President Maia Sandu said that if a referendum is held, she is ready to vote for her country to unite with Romania. Romania is a NATO and European Union member, and Sandu sees this path as a potential guarantee of protecting Moldova from external pressure. She said this in an interview with the UK podcast The Rest Is Politics.

The head of state noted that in today’s geopolitical environment it is becoming increasingly difficult for a small country like Moldova to preserve democracy and sovereignty. Sandu has repeatedly said before that Moscow has been trying to interfere in the country’s domestic politics, and she reiterated those concerns once again.

At the same time, there are real public sentiments. According to Reuters, out of Moldova’s roughly 2.4 million people, about 1.5 million hold Romanian citizenship. However, polls indicate that only about one third of the population supports the idea of unification.

Sandu did not hide this either: she said she understands that there is not yet a majority in society that would fully back the initiative. Therefore, in her view, joining the European Union is a more “realistic” scenario. Moldova’s government has set the goal of bringing the country into the EU by 2030 but Chisinau faces tough reforms and political resistance along the way.

In short, Sandu’s words do not mean “we will unite tomorrow”; they highlight how sharply Moldova’s security and future choices have intensified. Politics works like that: sometimes a single sentence can “wake up” an entire region.
