Driving has become a daily routine for many. But few realize the health risks associated with poor habits behind the wheel.
1. Poor driving posture
Novices often grip the wheel tightly and hunch forward. This harms your spine.
Correct posture:
back fully supported,
knees bent at about 120 degrees,
hands at the “9 and 3 o’clock” position.
This reduces spinal strain and prevents musculoskeletal issues.
2. Driving long distances without breaks
Bragging about driving for hours nonstop is dangerous:
blood pools in the legs,
risk of varicose veins and thrombosis increases,
fatigue leads to accidents.
Take breaks every 1.5–2 hours: get out, stretch, and move a bit.
3. Irregular breathing
Stressful driving causes shallow, rapid breathing. This may lead to:
hyperventilation,
dizziness,
panic attacks.
Use the 4-7-8 method:
inhale for 4 counts,
hold for 7,
exhale for 8.
It calms nerves and improves focus.
4. Skipping water
Dehydration during trips is common. Just:
1% fluid loss reduces thinking by 5%,
2% — impacts memory and alertness.
Drink at least 250 ml of water every 2 hours.
5. Ignoring natural needs
Many drivers avoid bathroom breaks. But this causes:
urinary infections,
cystitis,
kidney stones.
Plan your route with rest stops in mind and use GPS with WC markers.
Good driving habits protect not only your safety — but your health as well.
