After full time, the teams went into extra time, but no decisive advantage emerged there either. In the 118th minute Barnes put Newcastle ahead again, yet Bournemouth struck back via Marcus Tavernier in the 120+2nd minute to take the game to penalties.

The shootout was long and almost error-free. For Newcastle, Nick Woltemade and Bruno failed to convert their attempts. For Bournemouth, Evanilson, Alejandro Jimenez and Bafode Diakite missed their penalties. Newcastle ultimately won 7–6.
