Google Maps continues to adopt features from Waze. Now, users can replace the default blue car icon on the map with one of eight options, including a sports car, pickup truck, SUV, and sedan. This update makes trips not only more informative but also visually engaging.
To select a new icon, iOS and Android users need to open the route menu by swiping up on the screen. In the "Car Icon" section, they can choose not only the car model but also its color. Available shades include deep black, sky blue, bright yellow, sunset magenta, and more.
This feature brings Google Maps closer to Waze, where users have long been able to customize their car icons. The update is already available in the latest version of the app, which can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play.
Although Google Maps and Waze serve different purposes—Google Maps focuses on comprehensive navigation and location recommendations, while Waze prioritizes driving convenience—integrating Waze features makes Google Maps even more useful for drivers.
