OpenAI plans to introduce the new GPT-5 language model in early August 2025, rozetked.me reported. This model will combine the capabilities of GPT-4 and the o‑series, replacing existing models.
The new GPT-5 will focus on performance, scalability, and flexibility for different use cases. It will be released in three versions: main, mini, and nano. The main and mini versions will be available in ChatGPT and via API, while nano will be exclusive to API developers.
The o‑series models, including the popular o3, will be discontinued as standalone options, with their features merged into GPT-5. An open‑weight model similar to o3‑mini is also in development and may be released by the end of July. This will mark OpenAI’s first open release since GPT-2 in 2019, and it is expected to be available under a free license.
The exact launch date may change, as the team is considering infrastructure, technical, and market factors. However, preparations are well underway, and OpenAI has already notified partners of the upcoming release.
