New AI system predicts weather faster and more precisely

New AI system predicts weather faster and more precisely
Aardvark Weather, an AI-powered weather forecasting system, can predict weather more quickly and accurately than traditional methods, reports The Guardian, citing a study published in Nature.

Currently, meteorologists use complex algorithms for forecasting, which require supercomputers and hours of processing time. However, researchers from the University of Cambridge, in collaboration with the Alan Turing Institute, Microsoft Research, and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, have developed a new AI-based approach.

The system trains neural networks to analyze data from weather stations, satellites, balloons, ships, and aircraft, eliminating the need for conventional modeling techniques.

Professor Richard Turner from Cambridge University highlights that Aardvark Weather can be adapted for various fields, from African agriculture to European wind energy. It also enables accurate forecasting on an ordinary computer.

Additionally, Aardvark Weather provides forecasts up to eight days in advance, surpassing the five-day limit of conventional methods. Developers emphasize that the system can deliver precise regional weather data.
