Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, who was killed in an Israeli attack in September 2024, will be buried on February 23, the current leader of Hezbollah, Naim Qassem, announced.
Nasrallah led the group for more than 30 years and was killed in a series of Israeli attacks in Beirut on September 27. Due to the complicated situation, the funeral was held temporarily. Now Hezbollah has announced that a public "solemn funeral" will be held.
The ceremony will also reburial Hashim Safieddine, a senior Hezbollah commander who died a week after Nasrallah's death. Qassem first said that Safieddine was elected as Hezbollah's new secretary-general, but was killed before he could be officially announced. Therefore, Safieddine will also be buried with the title of secretary-general.
Qassem said that Nasrallah will be buried on the outskirts of Beirut "in a plot of land he chose between the old and new airport roads," while Safieddine will be buried in the southern Lebanese city of Deir Qanun.
Although hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel ceased after a ceasefire was signed in November, Israeli aircraft continue to bomb Lebanese territory. The Jewish state accuses Hezbollah of violating the agreement. Hezbollah has insisted that Israel is responsible for the conflicts and has called on external guarantors - the United States and France - to force them to comply with the terms of the agreement.
