German Chancellor Friedrich Merz gave a sharp assessment of Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip. According to him, such a situation can no longer be accepted. This statement was made during the traditional summer press conference in Berlin, reported dw.com.
In his speech, Merz openly criticized Israel and emphasized that the actions against Gaza’s civilians violate humanitarian norms. The German government has put forward two main demands to resolve the conflict:
first — a ceasefire,
second — full and effective humanitarian aid to Gaza’s population.
He noted that he maintains regular personal contact with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the issue. Germany feels a responsibility in this process, and if the Israeli government is ready to cooperate, Berlin is prepared to offer more assistance.
At the same time, Friedrich Merz openly stated that he does not support the idea of suspending the EU-Israel cooperation agreement. In his view, the doors to dialogue should not be closed. Maintaining relations could create opportunities for diplomatic solutions.
The Chancellor also strongly rejected equating Israel’s actions in Gaza with Russia’s aggressive war in Ukraine. He stated:
“Moscow is violating international law by attacking an independent state. Israel, on the other hand, is defending itself. It is completely wrong to equate these two situations.”
Merz’s remarks once again demonstrate that Germany’s foreign policy remains cautious, yet loyal to its principles. As the tragic events in Gaza continue to worry the global community, his call for peace carries special weight as one of Europe’s leading political figures.
At the moment, this statement is prompting serious discussions on the international stage. Germany’s position could mark a new chapter not only for the European Union but also for the UN and other international institutions. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
