Study Results: Banning Smartphones in Schools Not Enough
An international team of researchers has concluded that banning smartphones in schools will not have the expected positive results. According to a study conducted by scientists from 11 countries, these restrictive measures do not significantly improve the health, quality of sleep, academic performance and behavior in class among adolescents.

Banning smartphones is not the solution

The study began in England as part of an evaluation of the effectiveness of a policy to restrict the use of smartphones in schools. The results showed that such restrictions do not completely solve the existing problems. In some cases, they can even hinder the development of time management and attention skills in children. Scientists say that modern technologies have become an integral part of everyday life, and a complete ban on them is not a constructive solution.

A comprehensive approach is an effective solution

The researchers recommend introducing educational programs for children, parents and teachers on the effective use of modern technologies. They suggest organizing “digital hygiene” classes in schools. In such classes, children will be taught:
  • Limiting the use of smartphones before bedtime;
  • Critical evaluation of information on the Internet;
  • Practical skills such as following the rules of online safety are taught.

Experts also emphasize the need to support parents. Many of them do not know how to talk to their children about the use of gadgets. Therefore, it is important to develop special educational programs for them.

The right approach for the new generation

As modern technologies have become an integral part of children's lives, a more effective solution may be to channel them rather than ban them. Instead of a one-size-fits-all approach to limiting smartphone use in schools, it is more appropriate to develop the knowledge and skills needed to become informed and responsible users of the digital world.
