Recently, the use of caffeine pouches among teenagers in the US has been increasing. Experts fear this dangerous trend may soon spread to the UK and other countries.
These small, teabag-like pouches are placed between the lip and gum, delivering caffeine directly into the body. One pouch may contain as much caffeine as two cups of coffee, which can negatively affect health if overconsumed.
A Risky Trend on Social Media
On platforms like TikTok, some influencers promote these products, calling them “helpful” for athletes and students preparing for exams. They claim the pouches boost alertness and reduce fatigue.
Negative Effects of Overconsumption
Experts warn that young bodies are more sensitive to caffeine. Excessive intake may lead to rapid heartbeat, nervousness, headaches, even seizures and irregular heart rhythms.
According to the European Food Safety Authority, a child weighing 30 kg should not consume more than 90 mg of caffeine per day.
Can You Give Up Caffeine?
Dietitians recommend getting energy naturally. A balanced diet, rich in iron and protein, and slow-digesting carbohydrates can help children and teens stay alert and active.
