This statement came a day after a phone conversation between US President-elect Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin. According to the New York Post, this conversation was aimed at opening a new chapter in relations between the two countries, discussing international security issues.
In his speech, Pete Hegseth touched upon the details of the conversation, noting that although he did not participate, the negotiations were very firm. According to him, the parties considered the possibilities of reaching specific agreements to end the conflict between Ukraine and Russia and ensure regional stability. The US side is demanding that Russia maintain neutrality in the situation involving Iran and redirect its resources to other goals.
Donald Trump had previously emphasized in a conversation with Putin that Russia could help resolve problems related to Iran, but the most important task is to stop the war in Ukraine. In the view of the US leadership, Russia should play a constructive role in mitigating global conflicts by using its foreign political influence. It is worth noting that Iran and Russia have been close allies for many years.
