President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev announced at the inauguration ceremony of energy projects that the funding for the construction of the Kambarata-1 Hydropower Plant will begin in 2026. This plant is being built in Kyrgyzstan, with Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan participating in the project.
It was reported that in October of last year, Bishkek and the World Bank allocated $500 million each for this project. The president also recognized the efforts of Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan in the “Green Corridor” project aimed at supplying electricity to European countries.
Additionally, Uzbekistan has launched ICRAFT — the world’s first project for accounting greenhouse gas emissions. The World Bank assisted Tashkent in implementing this initiative.
As a result, a total of 23 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions were recorded. The construction of the Kambarata-1 Hydropower Plant in Kyrgyzstan began in the summer of 2022.
This plant, with a capacity of 1,800 MW, is expected to generate 5.6 billion kWh of electricity annually. The electricity is planned to be sold at a price of 5.15 cents per kWh.
An initial $5.2 million (412.8 million Kyrgyz som) was allocated for the project, with an additional $18.9 million (1.5 billion som) directed toward infrastructure development around Kambarata-1. The construction is expected to take 10 years.
