On January 22 of this year, officers of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained a two-year-old girl together with her father in the state of Minnesota. ICE transported the father and daughter to Texas for court proceedings. This was reported by “The Guardian”. The incident further intensified debates surrounding U.S. immigration policies and triggered strong public reaction.
It is reported that the father, identified in court documents as Elvis Joel The, and his daughter were stopped and detained by officers at around 1:00 p.m. on January 22 while they were returning home from a store. It is emphasized that the father and child were detained during an ordinary daily movement. That evening, a federal judge ordered that the girl be released by 9:30 p.m. However, federal officials did not comply with the court order and instead transferred the father and child to a detention facility in the state of Texas. In other words, the court order was not enforced, making the situation even more controversial.
Yesterday, January 23, in the afternoon, immigration authorities returned both individuals to the state of Minnesota. The family’s lawyers handed the two-year-old child over to the custody of her mother. The girl’s father, however, remained in detention in the state of Minnesota. Thus, while the child was returned to her mother, the issue regarding the father remains unresolved.
