Thailand conducts airstrike on Cambodia

Thailand launched airstrike on Cambodia

The Thai military has announced that it carried out an airstrike on positions in a disputed border area with Cambodia. Bangkok described the attack as a response to aggression originating from Cambodia.

According to Thai officials, two soldiers were killed on Sunday, and four others were wounded. Cambodia, however, denies initiating the attack, claiming its forces did not open fire first.

Cambodian authorities believe the conflict was initiated by Thailand, and insist that Cambodian forces did not retaliate. On Monday, the Thai army reported the destruction of a cable car system near the border, allegedly constructed by Cambodia for transporting weapons.

The border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia has been ongoing for many years. The most recent serious clash occurred in July.

During that event, five days of intense fighting resulted in dozens of casualties. Subsequently, the parties reached a ceasefire agreement mediated by Malaysia.

U.S. President Donald Trump had also been involved in peace negotiations. He reportedly called the leaders of both countries, warning that if the fighting did not cease, he could suspend trade tariff negotiations.

In October, Trump even traveled to Malaysia, where he witnessed the signing of a peace declaration between the parties.
